Some departments offer a Certificate of Advanced Study for students who are interested in additional professional training beyond the master’s degree but are not planning to obtain the doctoral degree. A master’s degree is required for admission to these degree programs.

Credit Hour Requirements

These programs require completion of at least 32 semester hours of coursework beyond the master’s degree. However, requirements do vary, and information concerning specific advanced certificate programs is available from departmental offices and in the appropriate Academic Catalog.

Time Limits

A student pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Study is expected to complete all degree requirements within five years of first registering as a degree-seeking student in the degree program, unless the student is enrolled in a program with a different time limit that has been approved by the Graduate College. Students who have not completed the degree by this time will be put on academic warning status. When supporting petitions for extensions of time to degree, it is the program’s responsibility to determine whether old course work is still relevant to the current degree.
